Blunt or sharp needles for transforaminal epidurals?
نویسنده
چکیده
To the Editor: Derby et al (1) noted that in 2003 approximately half (14/29) of International Spinal Injection Society (ISIS) instructors and the majority (14/17) of poll respondents reported performing transforaminal epidural steroids injections. Do the authors have any data as to needle type (blunt vs sharp) used? If ISIS instructors persist in performing transforaminal injections with sharptipped needles, this would appear to be a resounding rejection of the recent caveats appearing in the interventional pain management literature. Furthermore, although blunt tipped needles appear to be safe for use around canine renal arteries (2), no information is available to confirm the proposition that they reduce the incidence of serious complications in humans undergoing pain procedures. At this point in time the putative benefit is pure conjecture. Whether or not using blunt needles results in an unanticipated new set of devastating injuries unique to blunt Blunt Or Sharp Needles For Transforaminal Epidurals?

Comparison of blunt and sharp needles for transforaminal epidural steroid injections.
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare the sharp and blunt needles in order to determine the incidence of complications during transforaminal anterior epidural steroid injections. METHODS In this retrospective study, 185 cases that undergo transforaminal epidural steroid injection with sharp or blunt needles were evaluated between June 2004 and December 2008. Patients age, sex, diagn...
متن کاملDescription of Optimal Angle of Needle Insertion For L5 Transforaminal Epidural Injection Leads to Complications.
Ra and Min (1) painstakingly have described the optimal angle of needle insertion for fluoroscopically guided transforaminal epidural injection of L5. Unfortunately, this potentially increases further complications related to lumbar transforaminal epidural injections with the safe triangle approach (2).Clearly, the literature undeniably shows that the safe triangle approach may not be safe and ...

OBJECTIVE To compare the specificity and sensitivity of the skin pathergy test performed with blunt and sharp needles in patients with Behçet's disease. METHODS The skin pathergy test was performed using the simultaneous four needle prick method with blunt and sharp, thick and thin needles in 92 patients with Behçet's disease, 64 healthy controls, and 128 patients without Behçet's disease. Th...
متن کاملNeedle position analysis in cases of paralysis from transforaminal epidurals: consider alternative approaches to traditional technique.
BACKGROUND Transforaminal technique for epidural steroid injections, unlike other approaches, is uniquely associated with permanent, bilateral, lower extremity paralysis. OBJECTIVE To review the literature and analyze the reported cases of paralysis from lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injections to possibly establish a cause and to prevent this complication. STUDY DESIGN Eighteen ca...
متن کاملSeparable arrowhead microneedles.
Hypodermic needles cause pain and bleeding, produce biohazardous sharp waste and require trained personnel. To address these issues, we introduce separable arrowhead microneedles that rapidly and painlessly deliver drugs and vaccines to the skin. These needles are featured by micron-size sharp tips mounted on blunt shafts. Upon insertion in the skin, the sharp-tipped polymer arrowheads encapsul...
